Milliken’s Linen 2.0 collection brings classic textile design to the floor
Wednesday, April 3, 2013

Milliken’s global floor covering division introduces Linen 2.0, a collection inspired by the delicate and intricate textures of classic linen textiles. The nuances of yarn quality in traditional textiles were interpreted in the design and provide visual interest, depth, and complexity.

The Linen 2.0 collection was designed as one pattern with multiple tiles to provide greater visual balance. With commercial settings in mind, this product is available in a range of hues from neutrals to vibrant shades for a pop of color - and brings a level of sophistication to the floor.

Additional details include:

  • 32 standard colors that coordinate with Milliken’s color reference system
  • 1m x 1m modular carpet tiles
  • ComfortPlus® ES cushion (26% recycled content)
  • 20oz tufted, textured loop construction
  • 100% Milliken-certified Wear-on Nylon Type 6,6

TractionBack® Technology

Linen 2.0 is available with TractionBack® technology - a modular carpet backing that is less costly, environmentally superior, faster and easier to use compared to wet adhesives or peel and stick adhesives.

Milliken introduces Theory 2.0
Tuesday, March 19, 2013

Floor covering collection features expanded color line and customization options

Milliken announces Theory 2.0, a recently expanded collection from the global floor covering division. The revamped line is a continuation of the fun and playful design, providing more flexibility for customization with combinations of modern colors and updated patterns.

From contemporary circles to classic letter forms, Milliken's Theory 2.0 collection brings intrigue and discovery to the floor. Designers can take on a neutral palette or make a bold statement with predetermined accents - known as vibes - that connect and move between multi-directional textures, while still ordering a standard collection. With over 7,300 different custom combinations available, Theory 2.0 provides an array of options that range from rational to abstract – to create a variety of new aesthetics.

Additional details include:

  • Nine patterns providing small to mid-scale forms.
  • Sixteen neutrals, with eight different color vibe options.
  • Modular tile (1 meter x 1 meter) for increased functionality.
  • Tufted Texture Loop Construction with Nylon Type 6,6 Fiber.

TractionBack® Technology

Theory 2.0 is available with TractionBack® technology - a modular carpet backing that is less costly, environmentally superior, faster and easier to use compared to wet adhesives or peel and stick adhesives.

Milliken’s patented TractionBack simplifies floor covering installation with an environmentally superior alternative backing system for laying modular carpet tile. In addition to eliminating the need for wet adhesives or peel and stick techniques, TractionBack®’s high-friction coating doesn’t require any additional tools for installation - such as a gun, to install the carpet - and uses less materials and energy. No “peel” is required, just “stick” with TractionBack®.

Milliken Introduces Carpet Landfill Diversion Program
Tuesday, July 10, 2012
SPARTANBURG, S.C., July 10, 2012 – Continuing its century-long heritage of environmental stewardship, Milliken has introduced a new sustainability driver for its customers: Milliken’s Carpet Landfill Diversion Program.  The program provides simple means for customers to divert old carpet from landfills.

The Process
Milliken makes it easy to begin the diversion process – finding the highest form of recovery, including recycling it into new carpet, downcycling into alternative products or donating it to charity.

The process requires customers to request a quote for landfill diversion and submit a minimum 8" x 8" sample of carpet to help determine the best specification for recovery.  The customer will receive a quote from Milliken 72 hours after carpet samples and online quote requests are received.

As a founding and active board member of C.A.R.E. (Carpet America Recovery Effort) Milliken’s Carpet Landfill Diversion Program ensures all carpet will be handled in the most environmentally friendly ways, while following all C.A.R.E. guidelines.

Sustainability a Core Commitment
A carbon neutral carpet company, Milliken meets aggressive sustainability goals, including zero waste to landfill, to continuously improve and evolve sustainability practices.  Since introducing the first PVC-free carpet in 1986, Milliken has been working to reduce PVC in floor covering.  This initiative carries through even when acquiring outside brands, such as Constantine.  Because of this, all Milliken commercial tile and broadloom carpets in the U.S. will be PVC free once again in August.

“As manufacturers, we fully embrace our social and environmental responsibilities – and this includes providing services that allow carpet to remain out of landfills,” said David Moody, president of Milliken’s global floor covering division.  “Our products and practices – including our PVC-free floor covering and our newly introduced Carpet Landfill Diversion Program – all reflect Milliken’s desire to deliver innovative solutions and experiences to our customers.”

Milliken reimagines the floor plane at NeoCon 2012

Color Wash explores continuous and extensive color space,
rethinks how pattern is created

SPARTANBURG, S.C., June 11, 2012 – An innovative floor covering collection showcasing the groundbreaking technical advances in continuous color and pattern space will be featured at Milliken’s showroom 11-1149 during NeoCon 2012. The COLOR WASH collection explores the notion of “soft-tech” by using technology to infuse material qualities with a human and modern fluidity.

Color Wash is the latest collection that highlights Milliken’s contemporary and advanced methods of reimagining the floor plane, while illustrating large scale, continuous and seamless gradation with nuanced color change.

“By combining both science and design, we’re enabling our clients to think and feel differently about the role flooring can play in commercial interiors,” said Barbara Haaksma, vice president of design and marketing for Milliken’s global floor covering division. “Color Wash explores various subtle and large-scale gradations of color and pattern to create an endlessly monolithic aesthetic, while still offering the functionality and convenience of modular tile.”

NeoCon 2012 introductions
Color Wash – designed by Milliken’s Global Creative Director Cresta Bledsoe in collaboration with print research scientist, Scott Parry, PhD. – provides a large-scale sensory experience that redefines the limits of continuous and extensive color by blending human- and nature-driven patterning with advanced color science. Two designs define the collection. Matter, a vapor-like organic with subtle movement and fluidity, and Medium, a linear expression from broad strokes of nuanced color change.
  • The collection is available in modular tile for commercial settings and features 40 standard colors – ranging from bright, clear vibrant shades to sophisticated neutrals – that are produced by Milliken’s new proprietary high-resolution digital print technology.
  • All products are PVC-free, CRI Green Label Plus approved, and Smart Platinum Certified.
  • Designs in the collection feature 25% Recycled Content.

“Color Wash combines groundbreaking technology with a revolutionary design concept,” said Bledsoe. “The beauty of this innovation is its ability to be both a statement piece, as well as a quiet background.”

Milliken’s revolutionary printing technology
Milliken’s cutting-edge, patented digital print technology brings the concept of Color Wash to fruition. As a result of extensive research and development, this innovative high-resolution carpet printing system brings the traditional art form into the future through multiple industry-first features.

In addition to offering a substantially higher resolution than any competitive print technology that currently exists in the marketplace, the printing system’s primary colors combine to create thousands upon thousands of color options – forming a continuous color space that allows for a perfect blending and gradation of hues where no perception of color change is possible.
Milliken’s high-definition, high-resolution print technology a focus at HD Expo 2012
Tuesday, May 15, 2012
SPARTANBURG, S.C., May 15, 2012 – Milliken’s high-definition, high-resolution print capabilities will be on display during HD Expo 2012 (Booth #2911).  The global floor covering division’s technology has served as an integral part in creating both a unique collection, Allumé, and a new process that helps designers achieve elaborate and large scale designs on tile, InCode.  These two introductions allow for creative flexibility in meeting performance demands, while enabling designers the ability to offer new experiences in hospitality interiors.

Allumé – Light is the ultimate natural source that makes life visible, sight possible.  Unshielded by opaque materials, light has the power to pre-determine and influence our emotional responses to built environments.  Through the Allumé collection, designers can evoke emotion with flooring that showcases how light as design inspiration adds sophistication and drama to the floor.
 • This collection offers four patterns – Focus, Reflective, Radiant and Streams – and celebrates an innovative approach achieved through the marriage of great design to advanced print technology.
 • Nuances of color that transition from bright and vibrant to brooding and mysterious are realized through an exploration of new color space not before possible in high-definition, high-resolution printing.
 • For use in hotel public spaces, corridors and casinos – available in modular tile and broadloom.
Like all other Milliken floor covering products, Allumé is PVC free and manufactured by a carbon neutral carpet company that meets aggressive goals, including zero waste, carbon negative and green energy initiatives.  Additionally, Allumé contributes to LEED and other green building certifications.

InCode – Elaborate, large scale designs can now be achieved on tile through InCode, which also ensures a seamless installation process – even in expansive hospitality spaces.  This innovative coding technology combines the functionality of tile with the beauty and detail of broadloom through its one-of-a-kind install by number coding process for hospitality applications, including ballrooms, convention centers and exhibit halls.
 • An invisible code seen only through a hand-held UV light allows installers to correctly place tiles - and offers designers the opportunity to create extremely detailed patterns without forsaking the functionality necessary for hospitality settings.
 • The first of its kind, this invisible coding process simplifies tile installations. The code is imprinted onto the carpet face during manufacturing using injection dye printing, allowing a unique code to be printed on each tile.
 • The code does not wear off over time and can continue to help the property manage attic stock.

Milliken offers unique printing capabilities that are required to properly execute large-scale patterns on modular carpet tile, which is especially useful in hospitality applications.  Our Millitron® printing technology allows each tile to be printed individually in registration - to reflect the custom design as it was intended.  This capability allows for a range of design aesthetics and scale not achieved with other technologies.

Milliken, Guy Harvey announce partnership

New flooring collection features artwork by world-renowned marine artist

SPARTANBURG, S.C., April 26, 2012 – A collaboration between internationally known marine artist and environmental conservationist Guy Harvey and Milliken will bring scenes of underwater wildlife to a new flooring collection this spring.  Through a recent licensing agreement, the two brands will combine their areas of expertise to create a variety of indoor rugs and indoor/outdoor accent mats.

The collection – which will cater to those who share an affinity for coastal lifestyles and ocean ecosystems – features marine animals from tropical fish to mako sharks.  To depict accurate environments, it was imperative for Milliken to preserve the inspiration and intense colors behind the artwork.  Milliken’s hi-resolution printing capabilities and color palette enabled photo-realistic interpretations of extremely detailed renderings.

“For our designs to remain detail oriented in a floor covering medium, the most advanced printing capabilities are a must,” said Steve Stock, president of Guy Harvey, Inc.  “Milliken is providing the technology we need to achieve an accurate representation for the Guy Harvey line.”

The initial product offering will consist of more than 25 beautifully crafted area rugs with detailed images of marine life.
• Indoor rugs will be available in 3x4 feet, 4x6 feet and 6x9 feet
• Accent mats will be featured in 2x3 feet and 3x4 feet

Additionally, both Milliken and Guy Harvey will donate a portion of the proceeds to benefit the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation, which supports conservation and best management practices for sustainable marine environments.  Through science and grants, the foundation provides common sense solutions to reversing overfishing, pollution and other threats to the marine ecosystem.

According to Mark Clayton, residential business manager for Milliken, both brands have a history of serving as good stewards of the environment.
“This collection brings Guy Harvey’s artwork to new life, while creating unique experiences for our customers,” he said.  “But what’s also important about this collaboration is our shared stance on sustainability, making the partnership an ideal fit.”
Customers will be able to purchase the collection in retail stores late spring, as well as online through Guy Harvey’s website, www.GuyHarveyInc.com.

About Guy Harvey
Guy Harvey is world-renowned as a painter, underwater photographer, diver and marine biologist. Harvey, with permission from the Ernest Hemingway family, made a name for himself by debuting two sets of pen and ink drawings, including a collection titled Santiago's Finest Hour, inspired by the author’s book, The Old Man & the Sea.  Since then, Harvey expanded beyond pen and ink to develop an artistic style of painting and photography that captivates fish and ocean lovers. He is a member of the prestigious Society of Animal Artists.

Much of Harvey’s distinguished work is on a grand scale, having created full-wall murals at Nova Southeastern University in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, the Hollywood-Ft. Lauderdale International Airport and Owen Roberts International Airport in Grand Cayman. Harvey is the recipient Panama’s highest recognition, The Vasco Nuñez de Balboa Grand Cross and Silver Star, presented to those who make a positive impact in preserving Panama’s ocean resources. Solomon Shamah, Panama’s Minister of Tourism, presented the medal to Dr. Harvey.  For additional information on Guy Harvey, visit www.guyharveyinc.com.
Milliken introduces Straight Talk 2.0 and Out of the Shadows
Monday, April 23, 2012

SPARTANBURG, S.C., April 23, 2012 – Milliken has expanded their contract offering to include a revamped Straight Talk 2.0 and an adapted Out of the Shadows collection.  Both feature a clean, streamlined and sophisticated approach to floor covering design, allowing designers to create meaningful interiors.

Straight Talk 2.0 – With straight lines and right angles, this new collection offers rhythmic movement and a seamless transition from one pattern to another.  Improving upon Milliken’s existing Straight Talk collection, Straight Talk 2.0 carries over Snap Back and Eye Contact and brings two new patterns, Jive and Connection.

Other features include:
 • Total recycled content is 26.1 percent, and can be specified with Underscore® ESP cushion backing for 9 percent Post-Consumer recycled content
 • Tufted, textured loop modular carpet tile to be installed monolithically on all patterns
 • Available in 24 colors and 4 patterns
o Snap Back – providing a quiet stimulus and unique pattern
o Eye Contact – offering a perspective of ever-changing play
o Jive - introducing an extra element of movement
o Connection - bridging patterns through seamless transitions

Out of the Shadows – Evolving from Milliken’s popular Out of the Shadows collection in the U.K., this adaptation offers a broader selection of neutrals and more fresh, bright colors to meet the design needs of the U.S. market.  Ideal for open office and commercial spaces, all three designs coordinate with one another and can be installed randomly.

Out of the Shadows includes three patterns:
 • Shadowbox – a non-directional linear with detailed vertical slivers that shift horizontally to create larger scale subtle gradations
 • Silhouette – an ogee motif offering a softer edge and a larger scale organic pattern that can be random or precise in its installation
 • Splice – splices elements from Shadowbox with the larger organic Silhouette to create a medium-scale coordinate with subtle organic movement

“Straight Talk 2.0 and Out of the Shadows represent our commitment to continually improve existing collections – and bring successful selections to market,” said Barbara Haaksma, vice president of design and marketing for Milliken’s global floor covering division.  “The design world is ever-evolving to create new experiences for interiors - in response our collections are, as well.”

Milliken introduces 100% recyclable architectural folders
Monday, August 1, 2011

SPARTANBURG, SC – Made of 100 percent recyclable paperboard, Milliken has introduced its latest sustainable initiative for the global floor covering group: architectural folders - featuring removable carpet swatches – that can be discarded in the field at any paperboard recycling area.

According to Barbara Haaksma, vice president of design and marketing for the global floor covering division, sustainability has been a core value at Milliken for the past 100 years.

"Out of respect for our natural resources, we continue to pursue new objectives, policies and practices addressing green initiatives," she said. "These architectural folders are the latest contribution to Milliken's holistic approach to sustainability."

The Green Story

Milliken partnered with Campbell Printing, which is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council and located in Dalton, Ga., to design new architectural folders with the following environmentally friendly features:

  • Made of 100 percent recyclable paperboard – Once the carpet swatches have been removed, an architectural folder may be discarded in any paperboard recycling area. In addition, any waste generated from making a Milliken folder – such as trimmings – is returned to Caraustar, a manufacturer of recycled paperboard and packaging, to be repurposed.

  • Removable, recyclable carpet swatches – Removable carpet samples are housed within a special cutout in each architectural folder and remain there without the use of adhesives, metal rings or plastic trays. The samples may also be returned to Milliken for recycling after use.

  • Biodegradable film – Each architectural folder features a protective film laminate that is safer for the environment than other coating alternatives.

"We're constantly thinking of how we can adopt environmentally friendly practices into our business," said Tim Campbell, president of Campbell Printing. "We were ready to take on Milliken's challenge of creating 100 percent recyclable architectural folders. This is probably one of the most unique things we've ever done."

The Design Story – for inspiring interiors

To provide an experiential path for exploring new product introductions, every new Milliken architectural folder features an inspirational image on the front cover. Whether a Japanese stroll garden, a sample of candid photographs or an image capturing an act of self-expression, each sales book tells the story of the featured collection's origin, which can further conversations and foster creativity to create inspiring interiors.

Milliken embraces leather in unconventional way with innovative collection of sustainable modular floor tiles

Collaboration with Spinneybeck elevates eco-luxury flooring, awarded Silver Best of NeoCon

SPARTANBURG, SC – Redefining luxury floor covering, today Milliken unveiled the Rinascita collection, a group of recycled leather tiles with reclaimed and recycled carpet backing. Inspired by the notion of upcycling common material waste into a luxury aesthetic, Milliken developed this new collection in collaboration with Spinneybeck. Additionally, Rinascita was recognized with the Silver Best of NeoCon award for the resilient flooring category.

"Rinascita embraces the best of aesthetics, sustainability and authenticity to redefine what flooring can be," said Barbara Haaksma, vice president of design and marketing for global floor covering division. "We have engineered a break-through composite that is the ultimate upcycling collaboration."

Designed by Cresta Bledsoe, Milliken's newly named global creative director, Rinascita, meaning "revival" or "rebirth," features rich embossed textures, which takes eco-products to new levels of refinement. The collection's two textures – Bufalo and Castoro – receive a hand-rubbed finish providing a depth and natural quality.

Rinascita – the upcycling process

Milliken and Spinneybeck have re-imagined the waste from their processes into a new flooring material with the finished face substrate made of post-industrial content from the leather manufacturing process and cushion felt backing made of nylon 6,6 post-consumer carpet that has been reclaimed and recycled. The culmination of this innovative process is an accessible and beautiful flooring collection, which combines aesthetics with sustainable, flexible and functional features.

Aesthetics – While this recycled material has the ability to take on many aesthetics, Rinascita features elegant authenticity and embraces the recycled materiality for what it is, in a beautiful way. The collection is also environmentally responsible.

Sustainability – With recycled carpet backing, Rinascita is composed of 95 percent recycled content – 85 percent recycled leather composite and 10 percent natural rubber.

  • Backed and un-backed tiles have TractionBack high-friction adhesion options for less VOCs.
  • By creating a backing that is a component in the binder of the recycled leather, it can be ground up and fed back into the recycled leather stream – an environmentally friendly process.

Flexibility – Tiles are 50cm to coordinate with soft surface offering.

  • TractionBack adhesion system allows for ease of installation and tile relocation, when necessary.

  • In addition to the recycled carpet felt-backing option, tiles can be specified unbacked as 3mm material for transition with hard surface material.

Functionality – Uniquely more cost effective in its recycled form than in the virgin form, this rich, luxurious material is not only environmentally responsible, but also accessible.

  • Featuring unique backing, Rinascita tiles can transition with ease to soft surface carpeted areas, provide underfoot comfort, and allow more flexibility with evenness of substrate beneath than a standard leather tile.

"Together, Spinneybeck and Milliken are generating ideas and new ways of introducing compelling products for the A&D community," explains Roger Wall, president of Spinneybeck. "Rinascita is the consummation of these efforts thus far – and the beginning of a strong relationship."

Inspired floor covering for inspiring interiors on display at showroom 11-1149
SPARTANBURG, SC – Eight new floor covering collections will be featured at Milliken’s showroom 11-1149 at NeoCon 2011, during which the global floor covering leader will present its new identity to the contract design industry.

“With a new look and newly named global creative director, we’re continuing to build on the excitement of this year, while moving product forward in ever-inspiring ways,” said Barbara Haaksma, vice president of marketing and design for Milliken’s floor covering division. “These collections are conversation starters, allowing us to explore potential uses of the products, share where our inspiration comes from and foster creative conversations with attendees.”

NeoCon 2011 introductions
Fixate – designed by Cresta Bledsoe, who was recently named global creative director for Milliken’s floor covering group – celebrates the ultimate detail in stripes, exploring precision and varying widths of fine lines.  A dense, high performing felt-like cut pile base serves as a canvas on which to showcase the intricate detail and resolution.
• The high performance, low height cut pile bridges the gap between soft and hard surfaces.
• Playful and bold multicolor combinations capture a brighter attitude and more optimistic time.
• Fixate provides monochromatic combinations in fresh, clear colors, as well as subtle neutrals, providing an option for a sophisticated, highly detailed floor that lies down – and doesn’t “pop”.

Monuments & Shrines – designed by Todd van der Kruik – pays homage to the neon signs that were the hallmark of Las Vegas culture.  While time has moved on, the dramatic static display of size, scale and texture is captured in three patterns: Stardust, Nugget and Horseshoe.
• Total recycled content of tiles range from 45 percent to 55 percent.
• Large scale fluid lines with bold, integrated color separations create their own textures.
• The colorline coordinates with Southern Analog and Sound and Fury, while making a bold individual statement.

Urban Knit – designed by Todd van der Kruik - explores the trend-setting practice of “yarn bombing,” which describes artistic installations of crochet coverings on existing objects.  This new collection brings that aesthetic to the commercial interior in a playful, yet exuberant way.
• A series of textures give a knitted feel in both horizontal and vertical planes.  With a 6’ x 6’ pattern repeat, the floor highlights a randomized look.
• Total recycled content of tiles range from 45 percent to 55 percent.
• The colorline coordinates directly with Monuments & Shrines, as well as has cross-over companions to Southern Analog and Sound and Fury.

RINASCITA and ISOS, are two new additions to Milliken’s luxury portfolio in the Constantine Collection. Both products feature strong sustainability benefits, as well as redefine flooring materials in a new and dynamic way.

Rinascita – designer Cresta Bledsoe in collaboration with Spinneybeck – redefines luxury floor covering.  The recycled leather tile grouping features reclaimed and recycled carpet backing and was inspired by the notion of upcycling common material waste into a luxury aesthetic.
• Rinascita recently was awarded Silver Best of NeoCon award for the resilient flooring category.
• Rinascita, meaning “revival” or “rebirth,” features rich embossed textures, which takes eco-products to new levels of refinement.
• The collection’s two textures – Bufalo and Castoro – receive a hand-rubbed finish providing a depth and natural quality.
• With recycled carpet backing, Rinascita is composed of 95 percent recycled content – 85 percent recycled leather composite and 10 percent natural rubber.

Isos – designed by Cresta Bledsoe – is a 100 percent wool tile that celebrates a luxurious surface through a simple, graphic color block approach.  Each installation is made up of a subtle range of colors for large scale drama, complemented and balanced by the complete purity of form.
• Isos offers three patterns – Diagonios, Finite and Myriad – highlighting diagonal shapes that present a whole new way to think about solids.
• Three scales of patterns can stand alone as a pure graphic, as well as work together to create a more varied aesthetic.
• The ability to utilize a neutral-only color group, or interchangeably add the impact of a tinted neutral accent, allows for a subtle and refined approach to color.

Windows – designed by Ruth McRae and Bob Weiner– was inspired by the layers of shadows created when light comes through a window.
• This exciting new collection of subtle large-scale graphics coordinates perfectly with a precise pinstripe base.
• The Windows color line is adjacent to the ISOS collection and feature 18 colors.
• The technology highlights digital color placement on a new textured nylon base.

Illumine – designed by Cresta Bledsoe and Bob Weiner - delivers the height of luxury to commercial application.
• Highlights a series of luminous and subtle textures that uniquely create interplay with light.
• The heavy ounce weight patterns range in degree of loop and tip shear composition.
• Features three patterns – Lambent, Lucent, Candescent – and 19 colors.

Continuum – designed by Kate Poland and Bob Weiner – offers a range of broadloom and tile options that bring a level of value and sophistication to commercial interiors.
• Subtle patterns, colors and textures have an elegant and upscale aesthetic.
• Continuum features four patterns and 18 colors

In 2007, Bledsoe left her position at Constantine to start Manner, an interior and design strategies company. She maintained a consultancy role with Constantine, and expanded her involvement with Milliken after the acquisition of Constantine by Milliken in 2009.

As newly named global creative director, Bledsoe explains her vision to produce relevant designs that express a fresh point of view.

"Our goal is to elevate flooring into a diverse and dynamic new material that previously no flooring manufacturer has attempted." said Bledsoe.

Based upon the signature of the company’s 70-year leader and former chairman, the late Mr. Roger Milliken, the new logo is simple, playful, bold, and signals a continuing commitment to excellence, leadership, ethics and creativity.  It also reinforces the message of a common vision that runs through all of the company’s divisions, which includes its global floor-covering group.

According to Barbara Haaksma, vice president of marketing and design for Milliken’s floor covering division, the new corporate identity supports the division’s overall goal to serve as a true design partner within the architectural and design community.

“We consider what our clients need and what they want, which goes far beyond creating exceptional products,” said Haaksma.  “This consumer-centric philosophy allows us to provide inspiration for project ideas, insights on market trends and access to patented technologies – all the tools that help designers and architects be more successful.”

Over the past 18 months the floor covering division has created a variety of activities that support the company’s vision.  Milliken recently:

• Completed state-of-the-art design center
Designed by global architect firm M Moser Associates, the new design center in Spartanburg, South Carolina, provides access to the company’s innovation and research center to further collaboration, inspiration and idea-generation for the design team and our customers.  Catering to a variety of audiences, such as designers, end-users and associates, the facility includes spaces ideal for product development, brainstorming and cross-functional collaboration.

Program honors product innovation in sustainable interior design

SPARTANBURG, SC – Milliken's Sound and Fury collection – which interprets the power of sound, expressed through paint – was recently named flooring category winner of the 2011 Bloom Awards.

Interiors & Sources partners with the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) to present the annual Bloom Awards, which recognizes commercial products that combine sustainability and innovation in the interior design of commercial spaces.

The 2011 entries were judged on a number of environmentally focused criteria including resource efficiency, recycling and waste management, environmental innovation, materials selection and life cycle analysis (LCA), as well as aesthetics. Winners were selected in five categories: Flooring, Innovative Materials, Innovative Systems, Lighting and Textiles.

Sound and Fury uses Aquafil Econyl 75 yarn, a high-performance fiber with 70 percent recycled content, offering strength and life cycle comparable to fiber crafted from 100 percent virgin polymer. The total recycled content of a Sound and Fury tile is 44 percent.

Adjudicator Holley Henderson LEED ID+C, principal of H2 Ecodesign, commented on the technological advances in this year's green product submissions, most notably the inclusion of detailed life cycle assessments and comprehensive metrics. "The winners showed a truly integrated, holistic approach from the product level up to their manufacturing and company-wide commitments," said Henderson.
