Milliken Publishes 2nd Annual Floor Covering Division Sustainability Report
Thursday, October 27, 2016
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Milliken Floor Covering division released its second annual sustainability report with detailed insight and metrics addressing the company’s global operations, product offering and their impact on the environment.

“Environmental stewardship is an ever-evolving journey, and we have continued to improve our actions with meaningful results for more than 150 years,” shared Jim McCallum, president of the global Milliken floor covering division. “We believe this requires a holistic approach – with continued assessments to question the status quo. This very nature of comprehensive inquisitiveness is what defines Milliken.”

To create the report, stakeholders confirmed the material issues pertinent to architecture and interior design: chemical and human health impacts, recycled content and recyclability, resource consumption, supply chain impacts of products and employer of choice. The report meets the requirements of the LEED v4 MRc3 credit.

“This report confirms that the most environmentally responsible action Milliken can take is to design high-performing products with healthy materials that last,” shared Philip Ivey, global sustainability leader for the Milliken floor covering division. “By doing so, we reduce the need for replacement – which in turn inhibits a chain reaction of environmental impacts. It protects our customers, their investment and the environment.”

Material transparency advancements include:

  • 31 EPDs for Milliken flooring products
  • 14 Declare labels for material transparency and to promote healthy materials

Recycled content and recyclability achievements include:

  • Fulfilling zero waste to landfill pledge for 23 years
  • Implementing strategies to prolong the life of products, including built-in cushion backing, which expands the first life of Milliken floor covering up to 40 percent longer than hard-backed flooring and allows for reuse – the highest form of recycling
  • Reclaiming used Milliken floor covering from one space to serve more than 400 new spaces across a community

Supply chain impact insight includes:

  • Supplier collaborations to create accurate life cycle assessments
  • Supplier partnerships with companies including Aquafil, to result in more sustainable product offerings for customers

Key highlights regarding resource consumption include:

  • Reducing Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 9.02 percent and 10.42 percent, respectively, with only 10.98 percent and 9.58 percent additional reductions needed to meet 2020 goals
  • Reducing energy consumption by 13.61 percent, with only 6.39 percent reduction needed to meet 2020 goals
  • Reducing water consumption by 49.02 percent, already achieving the 2020 goal – with virtually no change in the company’s production outputs
  • Reducing waste generation by 13.08 percent, with only 6.92 percent reduction needed to meet 2020 goals

Employer of choice key highlights include:

  • Consecutive recognition as one of the World’s Most Ethical Companies®, a designation given by Ethisphere Institute
  • A safety incidence rating of .52 for Milliken floor covering sites, one of the lowest total incident and injury rates of manufacturers in North America

“Every day at Milliken is spent with a purpose and passion for making the world a better place,” Ivey continued. “Whether it is through optimizing our product materials to champion interior environments that promote well-being, or the choice to act in an environmentally respectful and ethically responsible manner, this is how we ‘do good’ for the world. We are committed to advancing our product offering and operations along this thread.”

Milliken Highlights Flooring Solutions for Various Facility Conditions at IFMA World Workplace 2016
Wednesday, October 5, 2016
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Innovative Milliken entrance systems, modular carpet and luxury vinyl tile (LVT), on display at IFMA’s World Workplace 2016 in booth 1117, address the many flooring installation situations that facility managers face as daily challenges.

Facility conditions such as subfloor moisture can significantly impact project timelines and budgets, lead to mold and mildew growth, and cause failure in the performance of flooring over time. Industry estimates of direct and indirect costs associated with moisture-related flooring issues are as high as $1 billion a year in the United States alone.

New Milliken flooring and adhesive uniquely address these challenges using proprietary technologies which also eliminate time-prohibitive testing before installation.

“At Milliken, our goal is to simplify the process, reduce risk and lower total project costs that facility managers face in specifying and installing new flooring. Milliken does this by providing multifaceted solutions that can withstand challenging installation conditions with exceptionally strong lifetime warranties to back our claims,” shared Stacy Walker, director of customer experience for Milliken’s flooring division.

Unparalleled proprietary Milliken technologies, including cushion backing and expert stain protection, which result in beautiful, performance-driven flooring are on display through three collections at IFMA World Workplace 2016: Continental, Freelay and OBEX.

Modular Carpet

Continental, a new plank modular carpet collection, is inspired by the magnitude of the earth’s dynamic geological processes and changing topographies — propelled by deep underground forces which separate and merge the earth’s crust to form new landscapes.

To overcome moisture-related issues, Continental features an innovative open-cell, PVC-free cushion backing — which enables carpet to be installed on existing concrete subfloors with 99 percent relative humidity (RH) and on new slabs only 90 days after pour when using new Milliken adhesives. Installation on slabs with 99 percent RH is a ground-breaking industry advancement, as previous standards only enabled installation on slabs with 85 percent RH without special adhesives.

Continental is warranted to be installed in many applications without performing moisture probe testing and removing old adhesive, thereby eliminating time, cost and risk incurred by facility managers.

Once installed, Milliken carpet tile uniquely manages moisture by preventing spilled liquids from penetrating the carpet face fiber and allowing water vapor from the subfloor to evaporate upwards through the tile. Coupled with AlphaSan AF antimicrobial defense, these features eliminate the moist conditions required for mold and mildew. The built-in cushion backing also reduces unwanted background noise, extends the life of the floor covering and enhances comfort underfoot.

A range of five pattern scales and eight to 16 vivid coordinating colorways offers a curated toolset to change the landscape of commercial interiors. Rift, a striation pattern with dynamic movement, grounds the collection while four larger-scale designs strike a keen balance between sharp geometrics and softer organic forms. Carpet tiles in 25-centimeter by 1-meter planks enable various layouts for unique pattern-on-pattern aesthetics and routes for wayfinding.

Continental features a solution-dyed nylon construction and a Total Recycled Content of 41 percent. It carries a UL third-party verified Environmental Product Declaration (EPD), Declare LBC Compliant label and is certified by CRI Green Label Plus for indoor air quality. The collection also contributes to LEED version 4, Living Building Challenge, WELL Building Standard and other green building certifications.

Non-Skid LVT

Milliken’s new award-winning Freelay collection redefines the design and eco-friendly elements of LVT. Inspired by building material textures, Freelay speaks to the modern aesthetics and demanding performance needs that facility managers require for contemporary interiors. An environmentally superior, non-skid backing only requires perimeter adhesive and enables Freelay to overcome traditional limitations of full adhesive-based LVT installation methods.

  • The bio-based, low-VOC formula is 100 percent phthalate free and FloorScore-certified for indoor air quality, allowing immediate occupancy after installation.
  • Freelay hides subfloor imperfections, can be installed over raised access flooring, provides an excellent acoustic barrier and has no weak points.
  • Facility managers are able to reuse Freelay tiles after their initial installation – the highest form of recycling
  • A unique 28-millimeter polyurethane wear layer is reinforced with silica beads to resist scratches and eliminate the time and cost of additional sealants and waxes.
Freelay features five patterns of woven grids and degrees of distressed details: Eero, Polished Concrete, Powergrid, Heritage Wood and Fargesia Bamboo. Tiles are available in 9-inch by 59.72-inch and 36-inch by 36-inch sizes, respective to each pattern. The collection also carries an Environmental Product Declaration and Declare label for transparency regarding the product’s lifetime environmental impact and ingredients.

Entrance Systems

OBEX® is a Milliken engineered offering of highly efficient modular entry solutions. The three- zone barrier system captures up to 80 percent of dirt, dust and moisture walked into a building within the first 10 to 30 feet, protecting facility managers’ investments in field flooring. The comprehensive system also helps prevent slip and fall hazards which arise during inclement weather.

Prior and Forma from Arx, OBEX solutions designed for entryway zones 1 and 2, feature ultra- durable interlocking tile systems optimized to protect high-traffic areas. Prior is replete with scrapers that remove particulate dirt from shoes as people move in and out of buildings in Zone 1. Forma for Zone 2 applications utilizes dual-scraping technologies. Sepio completes the three-zone approach with a 50-centimeter by 50-centimeter modular entry tile that defends against outside elements. The dual-fiber construction merges performance, aesthetic and sustainability with Aquafil ECONYL® 100 percent regenerated nylon yarns. Sepio patterns are inspired by popular Milliken solution-dyed nylon collections for easy design coordination within facilities.

Milliken Unveils the Intricacies of Nature Through Technology at NeoCon 2016
Monday, June 13, 2016
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Second surfaces created through the lens of Milliken technology are on display at the Milliken Chicago showroom during NeoCon 2016, unveiling the materiality of unearthed, natural elements in three new flooring collections from the global manufacturer  Lapidus, City Proper and Freelay.

According to Stacy Walker, director of customer experience for the Milliken floor covering division, each collection is inspired by the magnitude of the earth’s dynamic evolution and geologic process.

“The earth has an uncanny ability to evolve textures, colors and the shapes of natural materials over time. For 2016, we’re capturing the essence of this evolution with innovative soft- and hard- surface flooring solutions that bring the inspiration of the earth inside with striking, performance-based designs that Milliken technology exclusively provides,” shared Walker.

During the event, Milliken won a Best of NeoCon Gold Award, a #MetropolisLikes Award and was an honoree for Interior Design’s HiP at NeoCon Awards and the Buildings Product Innovations Awards for 2016. Those unable to visit Milliken during NeoCon can experience the showroom through a 360-degree video on www.millikenfloors.com

NeoCon 2016 Modular Carpet Introductions

Lapidus

Best of NeoCon Gold Winner - Carpet: Modular

Metropolis’ #MetropolisLikes Winner

Creating the uncommon from the common, Lapidus reinterprets the intricate patterns and textures discovered in natural, unearthed surfaces on a luxurious, performance-based construction. An innovative kit of organic design elements eliminates traditional design rules and invites both creativity and simplicity for contemporary flooring with extraordinary depth and flexibility.

Celebrating the power of Millitron®, the industry’s highest resolution print technology, Lapidus provides the foundation for forward-thinking interiors. Depending on color and tile placement, floor aesthetics move from organic and painterly to bold and structured. A modest yarn luster coupled with tip shearing add visual interest while layered tonal colors morph and stratify to emulate surfaces as they are found in nature.

Lapidus creates versatility with components that work in combination or stand alone as field flooring. Twenty color families and transition tiles connect layers of pattern for design fluidity, as tiles innately match when placed in any manner. Transition tiles artistically connect colors to define spaces or soften wall intersections.

Additional collection details:

  • Available in 1-meter by 1-meter square and 25-centimeter by 1-meter skinny plank carpet tiles
  • Constructed with Milliken-Certified WearOn® nylon type 6,6
  • Features a Total Recycled Content of 34.3 percent

City Proper

As visually influenced as we are by what we see above ground with pavement markings, worn asphalt and heavily traveled concrete, what happens below city streets also shaped our perspective for City Proper. It’s the intertwining cables, paths, tunnels and layers of municipal structure that reveal a glimpse into the true way a city breathes and evolves.

The newest addition to Milliken’s Constantine® Collection, City Proper features a range of scales through three patterns, EC1, Design Quarter and Underground, available in 24 standard colors.

Additional collection details:

  • Available in 50-centimeter by 50-centimeter carpet tiles
  • Constructed with Universal® solution-dyed nylon type 6,6
  • Features a total recycled content of 40.85 percent

Sustainable Performance

Lapidus and City Proper reflect Milliken’s holistic approach to sustainability, which considers the products’ entire life cycles. Each collection carries an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD), Declare label - LBC Compliant and contributes to LEED, Living Building Challenge and other green building certifications. Uniquely, they are also manufactured by Milliken using renewable energy and with zero process waste sent to landfill.

Moreover, Milliken modular carpet collections enrich indoor environments. Standard PVC-free cushion backing, a benefit unique to Milliken in the industry, reduces noise up to 50 percent, prolongs the carpet’s lifespan up to 40 percent and promotes well-being through improved indoor air quality.

NeoCon 2016 Luxury Vinyl Tile Introductions

Freelay

IIDA/HD Product Design Competition Winner - Resilient Flooring

Interior Design’s HiP at NeoCon Honoree – Workplace: Flooring/Hard Surface

Buildings’ Product Innovations Finalist - Flooring

Freelay redefines the design and eco-friendly elements of luxury vinyl tile (LVT). The high-performance LVT speaks to the modern aesthetics and demanding performance needs of contemporary interiors. Notably, Eero from the Freelay collection won the 2016 IIDA/HD Product Design Competition for resilient flooring.

Five patterns emulate building material textures with woven grids and degrees of distressed natural and architectural details.

  • Eero, winner of the IIDA/HD Product Design Competition for resilient flooring, illustrates how years of exposure to natural elements transform material structures. Underlying surfaces move forward as distressed architectural details and patina finishes fade in and out.
  • Nuanced color gives Polished Concrete the sleek sophistication of its namesake with the benefits of resilient flooring.
  • Tight woven textures inspired by electrical grids take center stage with Powergrid.
  • Heritage Wood relays the beauty of distressed aesthetics with the performance of LVT.
  • The relaxed lines of Fargesia Bambo lay the groundwork for a modern and tranquil environment.

An innovative, non-skid backing enables Freelay to overcome traditional inadequacies of other full adhesive-based LVT installation methods: the ability to hide subfloor imperfections, install over raised access flooring and reuse tiles after their initial installation – the highest form of recycling.

Sustainability

Freelay’s non-skid backing reduces VOC emissions and enables facility managers to reuse tiles after their initial installation – the highest form of recycling. It is also FloorScore-certified for indoor air quality and carries an Environmental Product Declaration and Declare label to be transparent about the product’s lifetime environmental impact and ingredients. Plasticizers are bio-based and 100 percent phthalate-free.

Milliken Reveals the Intricacies of Nature Through Technology at HD Expo 2016
Wednesday, May 4, 2016
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The ability for technology to unveil second surfaces that capture the intricacies of nature plays a key role in four new product introductions from Milliken’s global floor covering division⎯Unearthed, Archipelago, City Proper and Freelay⎯which launched at HD Expo 2016.

Whether unearthed in archeological digs or happened upon by chance, fossilized remains, mineral formations and flora reveal the intricacies of nature and provide insights about culture, civilization and the earth.

“The beauty and intrigue discovered in the materiality of natural elements has inspired Milliken’s new thoughts on texture, color and the definition of line and shape,” shared Stacy Walker, director of customer experience for the global Milliken floor covering division. “Milliken’s unparalleled range of technology enables us to unveil various second surfaces that uniquely replicate and maintain these intricacies while meeting a myriad of hospitality soft and resilient flooring needs.”

HD Expo 2016 Introductions – Modular Carpet

HD Expo 2016 Introductions – Luxury Vinyl Tile

Freelay – Freelay, a new luxury vinyl tile (LVT) collection from Milliken, debuts patterns inspired by building materials and systems and includes a backing system that requires virtually no adhesive. The environmentally superior format substantially reduces harmful VOC emissions, provides excellent acoustics and hides subfloor imperfections. It also overcomes limitations of other adhesive-based LVT installation methods, including easy repair/replacement and the ability to install over raised access flooring and repurpose tiles.

A micro bevel edge adds sophistication without compromising ease of maintenance, and a random ashlar installation enhances the designs’ organic quality in a cohesive manner. A unique 28-mil wear layer with suspended silica beads resists scratches and eliminates the need for sealants and waxes. The collection is certified to FloorScore for indoor air quality and carries an Environmental Product Declaration and Declare transparency label.

A range of five unique patterns are available in various tile sizes to inspire creativity.

  • Eero, 9-inch by 59.72-inch tiles, illustrates how years of exposure to natural elements transform material structures. Underlying surfaces move forward as distressed architectural details and patina finishes fade in and out.
  • Nuanced color gives Polished Concrete, 36-inch by 36-inch tiles, the sleek sophistication of its namesake with the benefits of resilient flooring.
  • Tight woven textures inspired by electrical grids take center stage with Powergrid, 36-inch by 36-inch tiles.
  • Heritage Wood, 9-inch by 59.72-inch tiles, relays the beauty of distressed aesthetics with the performance of LVT.
  • The relaxed lines of Fargesia Bambo, 9-inch by 59.72-inch tiles, lay the groundwork for a modern and tranquil environment. Notably, Eero won the 2016 IIDA/HD Product Design Competition for resilient flooring.

Unparalleled technology rounds out Milliken’s full offering to create and maintain beautiful hospitality interiors. OBEX® entryway solutions prevent up to 80 percent of dirt, dust and moisture from entering a space, and milliCare, a flooring and textile maintenance solution from Milliken, ensures flooring is properly cared for with environmentally friendly solutions.

Milliken Captures Sounds of the Sea with Whale Song
Thursday, March 17, 2016
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Milliken’s newly launched Whale Song collection illustrates the melodic beauty and complexity of the sea’s oldest composers. Capturing the behemoth mammals’ musical spectrum – from steady bass tones to sweeping crescendos – these complex ballads guide and connect us to another world of communication in the depths of the ocean.

“Whale Song reminds us that each environment, whether outdoors or inside, tells a story. We steward these environments by selecting clean materials to create interiors and manufacturing products responsibly to protect the natural world, dovetailing these harmonious concepts to create cohesive spaces,” shared Stacy Walker, director of customer experience for the Milliken floor covering division.

The highly textured, loop and tip shear designs of Whale Song interpret sound patterns created by whale communications and celebrate the environment in which their songs are sung. Stretched and elongated or pixelated to convey greater definition, each of the collection’s four standard patterns – Orca, Narwhal, Humpback and Beluga - offers its own perspective to the floor.

Reflective of the sound wave patterns created by whales when communicating, Orca creates a uniquely stimulating yet sophisticated carpet with dense movement that is at once angular and organic.

Narwhal explores the motion of sound, which moves four times faster through water than through air, traveling through the ocean’s expanse. The resulting design is a flowing diagonal that softens movement on the floor while maintaining interest and sophistication.

Humpback captures the underwater landscape, which is as diverse as that on land. A mixture of pattern scales ebb and flow while balancing positive and negative areas.

Imagining the effect of sound dissipating through water, Beluga creates a modern solid for the floor. Its textural gradation softens interiors with purposeful, yet quiet movement.

Environmentally minded floor covering, inside and out:
Whale Song is inspired by the life and habitat of the very oceans from which nylon waste is reclaimed to create ECONYL® yarns. Made completely from various nylon waste materials – such as abandoned fishing nets – ECONYL® nylon yarns breathe new life into old products that would otherwise pollute the world’s oceans and landfills. Moreover, Milliken manufactures the collection using 52 percent renewable energy and sends zero process waste to landfill.

Whale Song’s environmentally conscious construction and manufacturing are not only mindful of its impact on the outdoors, but also the indoor environments it creates. Whale Song is PVC free to help form interior spaces with healthy materials that promote well-being. It also carries an Environmental Product Declaration and Declare Living Building Challenge Compliant transparency label, allowing the collection to contribute to LEED, The Living Building Challenge and other green building certifications.

Additional collection benefits include:

  • Features an average Total Recycled Content of 55.6 percent
  • Available in 50 cm by 50 cm modular carpet tiles and in 18 standard colors
  • Provides a heavy TARR rating
  • Standard with PVC-free UnderscoreTM Cushion Backing to improve indoor air quality, provide 50 percent more noise reduction than other hard back carpets and prolong its lifespan

Milliken Named a 2016 World’s Most Ethical Company for 10th Consecutive Year
Monday, March 7, 2016
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Milliken & Company, a global innovation company, has been recognized as a 2016 World’s Most Ethical Company by the Ethisphere® Institute, a global leader in defining and advancing the standards of ethical business practices.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of Ethisphere and the World’s Most Ethical Companies® designation, which recognizes those companies that align principle with action, work tirelessly to make trust part of their corporate DNA, and in doing so, share future industry standards by introducing tomorrow’s best practices.

Milliken is one of just 14 companies to receive this honor every year since Ethisphere’s inception in 2007 and one of 21 privately held companies to be recognized this year.

A community of innovators dedicated to finding new ways to solve problems and enhance people’s lives, Milliken makes a conscious effort to instill high ethical values throughout its daily business practices. Corporate accountability, resource preservation and a shared mission to deliver innovations that ‘do good’ for the world are a few examples of why Milliken, a storied 150-year-old company, has earned this high honor for 10 consecutive years.

“The landscape of corporate ethics is changing, driven by an increasing desire for transparent relationships with companies in the industries and local communities in which they operate,” shared Joe Salley, Milliken & Company president and CEO. “Strong ethical values and a passion for meaningful innovation unite all Milliken associates worldwide.”

“Milliken’s 150 years demonstrate what few companies can: a sustainable business advantage supported by their values and commitment to ethics and innovation," explained Ethisphere CEO Timothy Erblich. “Milliken recognizes the correlation between ethics and performance and the value this creates for its communities, customers and associates. Congratulations to everyone at Milliken for being recognized as a 2016 World's Most Ethical Company and on your 150-year anniversary.”

Methodology and Scoring

The World's Most Ethical Company assessment is based upon the Ethisphere Institute’s Ethics Quotient™ (EQ) framework developed over years of research and vetted and refined by the expert advice from Ethisphere’s World’s Most Ethical Company Methodology Advisory Panel. The EQ offers a quantitative way to assess a company’s performance in an objective, consistent and standardized way. The information collected provides a comprehensive sampling of definitive criteria of core competencies, rather than all aspects of corporate governance, risk, sustainability, compliance and ethics.

Scores are generated in five key categories: ethics and compliance program (35 percent), corporate citizenship and responsibility (20 percent), culture of ethics (20 percent), governance (15 percent) and leadership, innovation and reputation (10 percent) and provided to all companies that participate in the process.

Aquafil and Milliken Partnered to Create Sustainable “Green Carpet” for 13th Annual Global Green Pre-Oscar® Party
Monday, February 29, 2016

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – With the shared mission of merging beauty and sustainable design, Aquafil and Milliken partnered to create and debut a custom-designed green carpet that graced the step and repeat at Global Green’s 13th annual Pre-Oscar Party in Los Angeles.

More than 500 guests, including celebrities, eco-luminaries, environmental companies and political leadership from around the world gathered on Feb. 24, 2016 to celebrate sustainable solutions and hear the latest green messages from some of Hollywood's biggest stars.

The annual Global Green event raised not only funds for critical environmental initiatives, but also global awareness of solutions to climate change. Global Green led by example on how to live greener lifestyles by featuring everything from a sustainable green carpet, to an all-organic menu, to making the event zero-waste and having celebrities arrive in eco-friendly vehicles. All of these efforts appropriately dubbed this party as the green event of Oscar week.

At the center of it all was the launch of the green carpet, manufactured by Milliken using Aquafil’s sustainable ECONYL® nylon yarn, which greeted celebrity guests as they arrived. Made completely from various nylon waste materials – such as abandoned fishing nets – ECONYL® yarns breathe new life into old products that would otherwise pollute the world’s oceans and landfills.

“Working with Milliken to create the green carpet for this high-profile event was a unique opportunity for our team,” said Giulio Bonazzi, chairman and CEO of Aquafil Group. “Sustainability is in our DNA, and we were honored to be a part of this process and to help Global Green further its mission. By working together, we collectively raise the bar of responsibility.”

The PVC-free green carpet represented just one of the sustainable solutions at this event. As the U.S. affiliate of Green Cross International, Global Green’s signature programs include greening affordable housing, schools, neighborhoods and cities as well as rebuilding communities that have suffered from the impacts of climate change, sea level rise and environmental degradation.

“It was important for Global Green to find the right partners for this event – partners who not only share our outlook on sustainability, but also the same values and goals,” said Elizabeth Nettles, director of corporate engagement and special events at Global Green. “Aquafil has been at the forefront in research of new production models for sustainable development, a pillar of why Global Green exists. So it’s fitting that Aquafil and Milliken provided the sustainable green carpet that welcomed eco-minded A-listers to the 13th annual Pre-Oscar celebration.”

“This green carpet helped us showcase a growing trend at the intersection of world-leading quality and sustainable design – a critical component to the greater environmental movement,” said Jim McCallum, president of Milliken’s global flooring division. “Our partnership with Aquafil enables us to create products that are at once beautiful, functional and sustainable, and the Pre-Oscar Party with Global Green was the perfect venue to showcase this trifecta.”

Milliken’s progressive flooring products offer environmentally friendly design solutions built from unique insights and unparalleled technical capabilities. All Milliken carpets in the U.S. are PVC free to improve indoor air quality and are manufactured using 52 percent renewable energy. The company has also sent zero process waste to landfill for more than 22 years. Its leadership in sustainable design is furthered by its eco-minded partner, Aquafil. For every ton of fishing nets recovered, Aquafil is able to produce enough regenerated ECONYL nylon yarn for Milliken to create roughly 11,000 square feet of sustainable carpet.

About AquafilSince 1969, Aquafil has been one of the leading players, both in Italy and globally, in the production of polyamide 6. The Aquafil Group has a presence in eight countries on three continents, employing more than 2,700 staff at 16 plants located in Italy, Germany, Scotland, Slovenia, Croatia, the USA, Thailand and China. About ECONYL® - Made from 100 percent regenerated nylon waste materials, Aquafil’s ECONYL fiber helps divert global waste streams from landfills and oceans and is used to produce a wide range of textile products such as sportswear, swimwear and carpets. As the company celebrates its 150th anniversary, it reflects on its heritage, a tradition of nodding to the past while designing for the future.

Designed by Milliken Senior Designer Ginny Jones, the floor coverings celebrate the creative and pioneering spirit that defines Milliken’s heritage, by embracing the heritage of cultures worldwide.

Notably, the environmentally friendly floor coverings are PVC free, manufactured using 52 percent renewable energy and designed with performance and longevity in mind. The collections feature high twist durability, AlphaSan® antimicrobial defense and MilliGuard® stain protection to extend the life of the carpet.

“We’re proud of the strengths that have been woven into the fabric of our company, which allow us to improve the daily lives of our customers,” shared Jones. “Through floor covering and sustainable innovation, our legacy as a company is becoming a part of our customers’ homes – sacred places where they build their own legacies and carry out family traditions.”

Imagine elevates residential patterned carpet to the next level, layering pattern and color to create a collection of flooring that will work in any décor. Eight new designs accompany the popular Imagine Figurative Display with exciting and relevant new patterns. Artful Legacy and Past Modern patterns reinvent traditional Persian ornament through modern distressing techniques. Cloud Bank is inspired by the moody paintings of English artist William Turner. Corita, Story Line and Cloister all find their roots in Asian architecture and ornament. Palmas and Relic celebrate the cultural heritage found in African dyeing and weaving techniques.

  • A total of 72 SKUs are introduced into the Imagine portfolio with colorlines ranging from neutral and earthy to deep and rich saturated tones.
  • Patterns can be custom colored using Milliken’s inspiredesignerTM tool with a 25-yard minimum and are available for Main Street applications using designforbusinessTM
  • Designs are available in 13’6” broadloom and five sizes of area rugs.

Hardanger,
part of Milliken’s Constantine Collection, a portfolio of richly textured, luxuriously constructed floor coverings, is a nod to the Nordic form of embroidery by the same name. Milliken Explores Curiosity of Color, Celebrates 150th Anniversary at NeoCon 2015

Milliken Explores the Curiosity of Color, Celebrates 150th Anniversary at NeoCon 2015

Two approaches to color explore subtle transparency and textural drama through leading high-resolution print technology

SPARTANBURG, S.C., – Milliken explores the curiosity of color with two collections introduced at NeoCon 2015 – Naturally Drawn and Color Field. Notably, the company – a leader in color chemistry throughout various industries – celebrates its 150th anniversary this year.

“Color fuels our curiosity – and it’s the individual interpretation that makes color meaningful to each person and place,” shares Stacy Walker, global director of customer experience at Milliken. “This very curiosity has inspired Milliken to explore the possibilities of color chemistry as we create a more colorful world from the ground up. Naturally Drawn and Color Field illustrate the power of color Milliken technology can create – and its effect within interiors to help evoke emotion and elicit a personal response.”

NeoCon 2015 introductions

Naturally Drawn – From nature’s calendar to the artist’s studio, colors and shapes of our outdoor landscape offer inspiration for a modern interpretation of carpet through classic forms. Exquisite and delicate mediums of watercolor, ink and pencil sketch reimagine the beauty of the natural environment. Free-flowing designs and gentle nuances of pattern invite designers to create effortless movement across the floor where colors layer, blend and merge with luminous translucency.

Designed by Claire Kimble, Helen Lloyd and Jacqui Jones of the Milliken U.K. Design Team, Naturally Drawn combines the natural beauty and simplicity of the artist’s hand with the pattern precision and color placement of the most advanced high-resolution floor covering print technology.

  • Four designs – Watercolor Lesson, Drawing in Ink, Hand Sketched and Hand Sketched Transition - offer versatile pattern scales and color contrast levels, from diluted backgrounds with tonal color washes to statement and transition pieces that effortlessly connect colors and patterns.
  • A range of eight to sixteen color stories offer ease of use and coordination across patterns, each drawn from nature’s own color palette.
  • Available with TractionBack® - an environmentally superior method to install modular carpet, which eliminates the need for adhesives, improves indoor air quality and reduces material waste.

Color Field - Inspired by the large swaths of color represented in the abstract expressionism style of ‘color field’ painting, this collection designed by Susan FitzGerald explores the details created when the distinction between subject and background are eliminated. With the ability to discern layers as if they were aged by nature, the collection offers 64 colors to create a quiet floor plane or allow punctuations of color with vibrant hues.

Non-linear color combinations provide a highly textural, organic aesthetic reminiscent of a natural grain. The incredible color spectrum helps shape a diverse range of interior environments, from playful and imaginative to modern and sophisticated, and the ability to create large-scale pattern through strategic tile placement allows the floor to be a subtle or dominant architectural experience.

  • High-performance, severe-rated modular plank allows Color Field to stand-up to the most extreme traffic while maintaining an imaginative color palette.
  • PVC-free plank design offers more organic, naturally gradated patterns shaped by precise color placement, which are only achievable with proprietary high-resolution print technology.
  • Gradation within tiles easily coordinates with interior finishes, and plank size invites creative placement for inspiring patterns or wayfinding.

Carbon-neutral floor covering

Naturally Drawn and Color Field are carbon neutral and manufactured by Milliken, a carbon-negative family of manufacturers certified by the Leonardo Academy Cleaner and Greener® Program that achieves aggressive environmental initiatives, including zero waste and renewable energy.

Additionally, the collections are PVC free and available with an Environmental Product Declaration and Declare® transparency label (Red List Compliant), which contribute towards LEED, The Living Building Challenge and other green building certifications.

Identity One from Milliken Finds Inspiration in Markers of Human Identity

Identity One from Milliken Finds Inspiration in Markers of Human Identity
New hospitality carpet collection invites designers to create unique identities for interiors at HD Expo 2015, booth 2813

SPARTANBURG, S.C., May 13, 2015 - The similarities and subtle differences of the human form are explores in the Identity One collection introduced by Milliken's global floor covering division, inspiring designers to create interior environments that carry their own unique identity.

Human beings are essentially 99.9 percent the same; only a small margin distinguishes us from one another. But in the remaining 0.1 percent, 3 million differences exist between the DNA of two individuals. This minimal percent matters.

The Identity One collection from Milliken explores the dichotomy between our true similarities and how subtle differences impel us to create and form a unique identity - and therefore, a unique space.

Two design series highlight marked features of the human form - the fingerprint and facial profile.

      • Latent illustrates the distinct curve of line and fine texture created by the human fingerprint. Though unique to each individual, if not carefully examined, this inherent trait can easily appear the same.

With Latent, explore various scales, textures and colors: all interchangeable to create many combinations and possibilities within each design. Innovative in its ability to     allow ultimate control of size, symmetry, texture, color and placement, designers can create multiple products using derivatives from the continuously repeating design. It speeds up the design process and gives creative freedom to designers.

  • Profiles reveals similarities found in the facial profile when scaled back to the simplest shape and outline. The distance between eyes, size of a nose, and shape of lips - all of which ultimately contribute to an identity. In the abstract adaptation of a facial profile, the design's varying curvilinear approach, which is more or less exaggerated, hopes to represent the diversity of each human identity.

A combination of large and small scales, and the ability to create tonal gradients with bold and subtle colors, offer incredible design flexibility within a standard collection.

Innovative kit of parts format enables unique interior identities to be born
Milliken's expertise in modular carpet provides a unique approach to scale, color spectrum and custom carpeting from a standard kit of design components.

Within Identity One, designers can interchange and incorporate multiple product features - color, scale, texture and sequence - to create unique and identifiable floor coverings.

  • Color - Begin with a neutral palette and incorporate a single or multiple accent colors to redefine the floor.
  • Scale - Choose from two scales to accommodate the specific scale a space requires, or use both for distinctly interesting effects.
  • Texture - Add one of two near-solid textures - Code and Imprint - to any color combination for subtlety or contract. In addition to enhancing long-term performance, the feature also introduces a tool for creative space planning when used as our fill, inserts and border effects.
  • Sequence - Control layouts with creative space planning and large-scale precision designs in modular carpet. A defining factor of identity, sequence matters.

"As with humans beings, spaces can carry an identity. The subtle differences are what make it memorable and identifiable," shares Tracy Francis, customer experience manager for Milliken's hospitality market initiatives. "Although the initial designs within Identity One are the same, how a designer manipulates various features will
determine how identifiable a space becomes for them, the client and guests who inhabit the space."

Sustainable full-range floor covering solution
Identity One is created using Milliken's patented printing technology, which offers the highest resolution and largest color box in the industry. Notably, the collection is designed to coordinate with Milliken solution-dyed nylon rooms carpet for a full-range product offering for a single design concept or idea.

Available in modular carpet, Identity One is carbon-neutral, PVC-free and manufactured by Milliken, a carbon-negative family of companies certified by the Leonardo Academy Cleaner and Greener Program. Additionally, the collection carries an Environmental Product Declaration, Declare label - Red List Compliant and contributes to LEED and other green building certifications.

This year, Milliken & Company celebrates 150 years of innovating with a purpose - the purpose to 'do good' in the world. The company's history of environmental stewardship, collaboration and unifying spirit is ever present in the innovation brought to market that continue to improve and enhance lives for customers, communities and the world in which we live.

Milliken Introduces Obex Entryway Walk-Off Modular Carpet

Milliken Introduces Obex Entryway Walk-off Modular Carpet
Industry-leading entryway solutions evolve with superior walk-off modular carpet

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Milliken expands its proven OBEX entryway solutions with Quadrus, an innovation modular floor covering system for safe and effective building entryways.

Engineered for Zone 3 indoor entryway applications where moisture absorption is critical to protect against elements that post safety hazards, Quadrus combines superior textile construction with ComfortPlus cushion backing. Dual-fiber Milliken WearOn nylon yarn and an open textile construction trap dirt and moisture, while allowing easy removal during maintenance. The modular format enhances installation flexibility and ease of maintenance, as individual tiles can be lifted for cleaning or replacement.

Two products - Quadrus and Quadrus Brush - provide various levels of performance and scraping effects for the ideal balance of design and function. Quadrus Brush, the most aggressive construction, can also be installed in Zone 2 entryway applications when architectural environments do not allow for grid systems.

Other features and benefits include:
  • Flexible, easy-to-cut constructions to fit any shape within a building, from revolving doors to hexagonal or semi-circular areas
  • Available in two patterns and eight colors, which coordinate with OBEX Prior and Forma grids for entryway Zones 1 and 2
  • Custom patterns and colors available to respond to any interior aesthetic
  • Ideal for active circulation areas to avoid with specific needs, such as anti-fatigue and wet conditions

According to the Worldwide Cleaning Association, 70 to 90 percent of soil that enters a facility is walked in through the front door. Without entryway systems, this can total as much as 24 pounds by only 1,000 people - going from inviting to disastrous in a short period of time.

"Building owners and facility managers are challenged to keep facilities clean and safe while optimizing their every-shrinking maintenance budget. Quadrus greatly expands options to create a beautiful, durable and safe entryway while keeping performance top of mind," shares Donald Hooper, regional manager, commercial entryway systems for Milliken floor covering division.

Milliken Named A 2015 World's Most Ethical Company by Ethisphere Institute
Tuesday, March 10, 2015

Milliken & Company Named a 2015 World's Most Ethical Company by the Ethisphere Institute
Ninth consecutive recognition demonstrates continued commitment to ethical leadership

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Milliken & Company, a global innovation company, has been recognized as a 2015 World's Most Ethical Company by the Ethisphere Institute, the global leader in defining and advancing the standards of ethical business practices.

The World's Most Ethical Companies designation recognizes those organizations that have had a material impact on the way business is conducted by fostering a culture of ethics and transparency at every level of the company.

Being an honoree for nine consecutive years underscores Milliken & Company's commitment to leading ethical business standards and practices, ensuring long-term value to key stakeholders including customers, employees, suppliers and communities. Milliken & Company is one of only 15 companies that can claim this consecutive distinction and one of only 16 private companies receiving this year's award.

"As a community of innovators, our associates understand the importance of conducting business in accordance with the highest ethical standards and are inspired by the idea of bringing innovations to the market that have a positive impact on the world," shared Joe Salley, president and CEO of Milliken & Company.

"The World's Most Ethical Companies embrace the correlation between ethical business practice and improved company performance. These companies use ethics as a means to further define their industry leadership and understand that creating an ethical culture and earning the World's Most Ethical Companies recognition involved more than just an outward facing message or a handful of executives saying the right thing," said Ethisphere's Chief Executive Officer, Timothy Erblich. "Earning this recognition involves the collective action of a global workforce from the top down. We congratulate everyone at Milliken for this extraordinary achievement."

The World's Most Ethical Company assessment is based upon the Ethisphere Institute's Ethics QuotientTM (EQ) framework developed over years of research to provide a means to assess an organization's performance in an objective, consistent and standardized way. The information collected provides a comprehensive sampling of definitive criteria of core competencies, rather than all aspects of corporate governance, risk, sustainability, compliance and ethics. The EQ framework and methodology is determined, vetted and refined by the expert advice and insights gleaned from Ethisphere's network of thought leaders and from the World's Most Ethical Company Methodology Advisory Panel.

Scores are generated in five key categories: ethics and compliance program (35 percent), corporate citizenship and responsibility (20 percent), culture of ethics (20 percent), governance (15 percent) and leadership, innovation and reputation (10 percent).

The full list of the 2015 World's Most Ethical Companies can be found at http://ethisphere.com/worlds-most-ethical/wme-honorees/.

Milliken Launches Kai Collection

Modular carpet designs celebrate mid-century American surfing culture

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Milliken introduces the Kai Collection, a series of graphic mid-century floor covering designs which pay homage to the classic American surf culture of the 1950’s and 1960’s.

Designed by Susan Fitzgerald, the collection features fluid shapes that transition from dense to dissipating, much like the incoming ocean tide. Clean and modern lines are paired with textures of Polynesian bark cloth, creating a harmony of patterns with various treatments.

Three patterns encompass iconic symbols of the surfing counter culture through a range of scale and texture. Tapa, inspired by traditional Polynesian bark cloth fabric, provides a small-scale, near solid pattern. Nalu, meaning ‘to surf,’ features a mid-scale wood grain aesthetic inspired by the woodie wagons surfers often drove to the California shore. Fin, inspired by the fin of a surfboard, offers a bold statement piece with color vibes, which allow multi-color customization in a standard collection. The 20-tile design creates a playful random pattern that ebbs and flows across the floor plane.

Additional collection benefits include:

  • Modular carpet (1 m x 1 m) with 31 percent Total Recycled Content Tufted, textured loop construction of Milliken Certified WearOn® Nylon Type 6,6
  • Standard with PVC-free UnderscoreTM ES Cushion Backing, which increases the first life of the carpet by up to 50 percent
  • Protected with StainSmart® to provide both a stain/soil repellent and resistant
  • Rated severe durability to withstand the heaviest trafficked areas
  • Available with TractionBack® - a less costly and environmentally superior method for installing modular carpet tile

“Floor covering should enhance the individual story of an interior environment,” comments Bob Hutchison, vice president of global design for the Milliken floor covering division. “Free-flowing organic patterns, such as Kai, invite those who experience it to express their own freedom.”

Carbon-neutral, PVC-free floor covering

The Kai Collection is PVC-free and manufactured by Milliken, a carbon-negative family of companies certified by the respected Leonardo Academy Cleaner and Greener® Program.

Additionally, Kai carries an Environmental Product Declaration, Health Product Declaration and a Declare® transparency label. The collection also contributes to LEED, The Living Building Challenge and other green building certifications.

Altered Form, Inis Mór floor covering collections named best of year for beautifully designed, environmentally superior qualities

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Milliken was honored with two Best of Year Awards for 2014 presented by Interior Design magazine. Altered Form – Best of Year winner for Flooring: Carpet/Broadloom

Milliken redefines flooring at NeoCon 2014

Milliken redefines role of flooring in interior environments

with expansive colors, changing perspectives

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Two award-winning floor covering collections from Milliken explore the various ways to combine unparalleled design and technology approaches during NeoCon 2014.

“These collections stretch the realm of possibility in floor covering design,” notes Barbara Haaksma, vice president of corporate marketing communications at Milliken. “Both collections are unique in their approach to combining insights, aesthetics, scale and technology. We cannot help but be inspired by these designs and are excited to continue our mission of bringing innovation to the market by redefining the role flooring can play in the interior environment.”

NeoCon 2014 Introductions

Lume e Lustro presents a tactile dimensional world with a 2-D and 3-D juxtaposition that explores rich texture and flat graphics. Designed by Cresta Bledsoe in collaboration with Dr. Scott Parry, print research scientist, an optical mise-en-scène is created through a surface play of reflected light - revealing volume and revealing texture.

      • Milliken's new proprietary MICRO-GLACE' technique creates heightened surface luminosity with a random abrash texture, reimagining what is possible with Milliken's market leading print capabilities.
      • Constructed with a complex mix of luster level and dye level fibers of Milliken-Certified WearOn® Nylon Type 6,6, a very high twist creates a unique substrate. The result reflects the detail, dye depth and richness of handmade silk shag with the precision, scale and performance of commercial modular tile.
      • Features an expanse of 40 colors, from an extensive foundation of subtle neutrals to bright, electric pops and accents.
      • Available in 1 meter modular tile for increased functionality.

Notably, the Lume e Lustro collection received a HiP Award for Design Solution Underfoot, an inagural NeoCon awards program organized by Interior Design magazine.

Dissemblage, also designed by Cresta Bledsoe, dismantles traditional modes of thought on floor covering. The unexpected unfolds with tailored woven ribs that veil precise geometries and bold super graphics. Pattern is revealed as people move around the interactive woven metallic design, which reads as a solid ground except in the area in which you stand.

  • Features two approaches, SMALL DISSEMBLE and LARGE DISSEMBLE, illustrated in five patterns.
  • Super scale 12' x 35' overprint patterns enhance the grandeur and luxury of the designs.
  • A tightly woven construction of 100% recycled Aquafil Econyl solution-dyed nylon, the world’s first and only 100% sustainable polymer, provides a surface that wears like concrete yet still provides the benefits of a textile.
  • Available in broadloom.

Notably, Dissemblage received a Silver Best of NeoCon Award organized by Contract magazine.

Environmentally friendly floor covering

Lume e Lustro and Dissemblage are PVC-free and manufactured by Milliken, an industry leader in environmental stewardship. Additionally, Lume e Lustro is available with an Environmental Product Declaration, Health Product Declaration and Declare® transparency label, which contribute to LEED version 4 credits, The Living Building Challenge and other green building certificatinos.

Milliken's Altered Form Collection Explores Energy And Its Transformative Power
Wednesday, May 14, 2014

Milliken’s Altered Form Collection explores energy and its transformative power

New hospitality carpet collection’s abstraction of macro and micro perspectives on display at HD Expo 2014

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The continuous transformation of energy throughout nature is the focus for the Altered Form Collection introduced by Milliken’s global floor covering division.

Inspired by the first law of thermodynamics, the collection takes an inquisitive view of the earth’s natural resources as it transitions from one form to another - and through that transition, creates inspiring pattern formations. Two perspectives, micro and macro, unveil striking patterns that are inherently abstract, with a balance of scale and relief.

Beauty in abstract adaptation of energy as a transformative power

Much like the scientists who studied the mystery of energy throughout history, the ‘unknown’ led them to many wonderful discoveries. Milliken’s examination of this topic unveils that particular geometries found in nature are reminiscent of various abstract forms.

Balancing an approach of science combined with design, Milliken designers Kristin Gruenefeld and Lisa Bailey viewed the collection as an exploration of micro and macro views. The result is an expansive offering of 25 designs influenced by the transformative power of natural energy sources, which invoke life into an interior.

According to Laura Roman, hospitality design director for Milliken’s floor covering division, “The viewer’s unique perspective and their interpretation enhances the intrigue of the collection as well as the discoveries within each pattern.”

Micro to Macro

The power of the collection lies in the interpretation of the thumbprint of energy, allowing our imaginations to explore and see beyond the surface to the perhaps even the molecular level.

An examination of the micro level (or many parts) offers a glimpse into the intricate geometries and subtleties within a single part of nature. Dandelion, one pattern within the collection, illustrates the exploration of a simple dandelion in a micro point of view. From a blossoming flower evolving into a seed pod transported by the wind, the design reveals nature’s simplest but most powerful transformation of raw energy – self-renewal.

A widened perspective of the macro view (or sum) highlights the inherent sense of detail and density of nature’s many parts. The linear qualities of earth formations in Land Lines illustrate how many small parts are used to create a large, striking pattern that is unrivaled; each piece playing a pivotal role in the overall aesthetic, much like the world in which we live.

High-definition, high-resolution printing

Altered Form is created using Milliken’s patented printing technology, which offers the highest resolution in the industry.

“Such capabilities allow the patterns to be printed exactly as intended,” notes Tracy Francis, customer experience manager for Milliken’s hospitality market initiatives. “The incredible definition and luminous transition between colors give the illusion of movement - a key component to the collection.”

Designers can also create custom floor coverings through Altered Form. The extreme abstract approach can be applied to a desired image of nature, providing a unique modern aesthetic tailored to an individual interior.

Available in broadloom and modular tile, Altered Form is PVC-free and is manufactured by Milliken, an industry leader in sustainable practices and environmental stewardship. Additionally, the collection contributes to LEED and other green building certifications.

Milliken introduces Inis Mór, Landscape

New floor covering collections explore textured loop constructions

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The richness of a structured loop textile is explored with two new floor covering collections from Milliken, Inis Mór and Landscape. The introductions enhance the company’s commercial portfolio of high-performance product offerings while broadening aesthetic qualities for interiors.

The Inis Mór collection, inspired by the structure of Irish fishermen’s sweaters, draws upon the influence of a traditional looped stitch – of the most basic, yet complex forms of textile creation. Two designs, Ballybane and Kilronan, provide small and large-scales of organic pattern that offer ease of movement across the floor plane.

Reflected in both pattern and construction, the all loop textile delivers incredible resilience and withstands the extreme wear and tear of high traffic areas. Coordinating collections and colors can be found through Milliken’s Color Reference System.

Additional details include:

  • 18 colors
  • Modular carpet tile (50 cm x 50 cm)
  • Tufted, textured loop construction of Aquafil Econyl Solution-Dyed Nylon Type 6
  • 44 percent Total Recycled Content
  • Standard PVC-free UnderscoreTM ES Cushion Backing and can be specified with UnderscoreTM ESP Cushion Backing
  • TractionBack technology - a modular carpet backing that is less costly, environmentally superior, faster and easier to use compared to wet adhesives or peel and stick adhesives

   ·    The Landscape collection, part of Milliken’s Constantine® Collection, is a structured loop and tip shear construction designed to provide a solid background for interior environments. Inspired by the immense variety of landscapes on earth that become the backdrop to people’s lives, the rich texture of the design reflects the living character and quality that define a region and its people, creating a sense of place.

Available in all 140 standard colors within Milliken’s Color Reference System, there is endless potential to offer custom colors an extended range of color coordination within the Milliken portfolio.

Other features include:

  • Patterned cut and loop construction of 100 percent Milliken-Certified WearOn Nylon Type 6,6
  • Broadloom carpet (13 ft 6 in)
  • Standard Edura-LocTM Backing and available with EPA3 Attached Cushion
  • Rated for heavy traffic end-use

“Resilient textile constructions in floor coverings enable designers to elevate their space through both aesthetics and performance,” said Barbara Haaksma, vice president of design and marketing for Milliken’s global floor covering division. “By exploring the many ways a construction method can offer a variety of design qualities, Milliken can continue to provide floor coverings that fulfill a variety of designer and end user needs.”

Additionally, Inis Mór and Landscape are PVC-free and contribute to LEED and other green building certifications.

Milliken introduces Nordic Stories, Fretwork

Two new floor covering collections explore tonal texture and lightness of line

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Milliken announces the Nordic Stories and Fretwork collections, in keeping with a desire to provide innovative floor covering solutions that invite designers to think about the floor plane with fresh perspectives. The collections explore unique inspirations and design aesthetics that can only be brought to life through Milliken’s high-definition printing capabilities.

The Nordic Stories collection brings Scandinavian-influenced color and texture to the floor plane, paying homage to a series of diverse countries that have collectively helped define contemporary design culture.

Developed by Milliken’s in-house European design team, Nordic Stories is inspired by the textural landscape, geological extremes, folklore and modern culture of the Northern Hemisphere. Muted natural tones, black volcanic rock, deep blue lakes, rich golden moss, graphic landforms and bold architecture are interpreted through three patterns, providing a sensory experience to interior environments that is uniquely Nordic.

  • Features three patterns: Hidden Plains (16 colors), Isograd and Tectonic (18 colors each)
  • Available in 50 cm x 50 cm modular carpet tiles
  • Contains 31 percent Total Recycled Content
  • Rated for severe traffic durability
  • Tufted, textured loop construction of Universal® Fibers Solution-Dyed Nylon Type 6,6
  • Standard PVC-free UnderscoreTM ES Cushion Backing and can be specified with UnderscoreTM ESP Cushion Backing

The Fretwork collection offers unprecedented detail to interior environments through precision and lightness of line. The rhythmic and interlacing mathematical patterns create a lace effect that is both modern and architectural – almost as though there is a delicate geometric scrim stretched across the floor plane.

With Fretwork, Milliken continues to explore line quality and edge of tile registration only possible through Milliken’s high-resolution digital printing technology. All four patterns - Crosshatch, Harmonic, Brise Soleil and Kaleidoscope - are designed to work within themselves in tile-to-tile pattern registration as well as between small, mid-scale and large patterns.

  • Features four patterns available in 24 standard colors
  • Available in 1 m x 1 m modular carpet tiles
  • Tufted, loop/tip-shear construction of Milliken-Certified WearOn® Nylon Type 6,6
  • Rated for heavy traffic end-use
  • Contains 25 percent Total Recycled Content
  • Standard with ComfortPlus® ES Cushion Backing and also available with ComfortPlus® ESP Cushion Backing

“We aspire to continually push the boundaries of flooring design through beautiful aesthetics, unique inspiration stories, superior functionality and state-of-the-art design and printing capabilities,” said Barbara Haaksma, vice president of design and marketing for Milliken’s global floor covering division. “These collections illustrate a commitment to offer designers new ways to bring interiors to life through meaningful floor covering.”

TractionBack®

Both Nordic Stories and Fretwork are available with Milliken’s TractionBack® technology, a modular carpet backing that is less costly, environmentally superior and faster and easier to use compared to wet adhesives or peel and stick adhesives. There is no ‘peel,’ just ‘stick’ with TractionBack®.

Nordic Stories and Fretwork are PVC-free and contribute to LEED and other green building certifications desirable in today’s environmentally conscious architecture and design industry.
