Pinterest – a channel for creativity or setting trends?

As you might already know, Pinterest is a virtual pinboard where people can collect, organize and share the things they find interesting – like fashion trends or interior decorating tips. In fact, Pinterest is one of the fastest growing social media sites. However, did you know that by embracing a visual and creative process, Pinterest could be providing an avenue to cultivate powerful trends and telling data?

Fast Company shared a thrilling article about a project called Colour and Space, headed up by two Turkish designers, that was able to use millions of Pinterest boards as a canvas for interior design color trends. By monitoring pins and boards of users in Turkey, they were actually able to find strong color preferences by room.

Even more fascinating, they started digging further and found that there are regional color preferences as well. Indeed, China residents may love different colors than Americans, who love different colors than Belgians.

Do you think the findings are convincing? Is it possible that color trends can change over time? Who has the ultimate influence on color trends – carpet designs, wall paints, household appliances, designers, architects, or even consumers?

Here are the project’s charts of color and room preferences for Turkish Pinterest users.
