Learning environments that feel like cold institutions do
little to encourage and motivate students – and can often stifle a student’s
natural creativity and passion.
To offer college-preparatory education in the Pittsburgh
area, The Neighborhood Academy constructed two new academic buildings that span
150,000 square feet. These new facilities allow the school to continue its
mission of breaking the cycle of generational poverty by preparing youth – who
would not otherwise have the financial resources – for higher education. And
while it was important to offer adequate classroom settings, they also wanted
to invite students in with a warm, nurturing and vibrant atmosphere. Milliken
and Stantec – an award-winning interior design firm –joined forces to create a customized,
durable and inspiring space for faculty, students and staff to use and enjoy
for years to come.
